VolunteerSea to Sea – Canada Marketing & Communications Intern

Sea to Sea 2017 is a cross-continental bike tour seeking to end poverty through fundraising and awareness.  Sea to Sea is looking for an undergraduate student in Canada – GTA area who is majoring in Communication, Marketing or Advertising.  This person should have excellent oral and written communication skills and a passion for ending poverty. The Sea to Sea Development Intern will be in charge of locating and contacting colleges in Canada, with the intention of getting schools and students involved in Sea to Sea bike tour.  The intern will also have the opportunity to participate in a leg of the ride.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Sea to Sea intern will locate colleges and universities along the route in Canada and the US.
    Identify colleges/universities with cycling clubs or groups, or with social justice/advocacy groups

  • Develop a contact list that outlines the colleges/universities and their geographical locations.

  • Design a communication plan to contact each college/university
    - Have conversations to gain their support
    - Identify an advocate or leader within the college to be the point person
    - Lobby the school & student body’s involvement in Sea to Sea 2017

  • Assist in the distribution and delivery of marketing materials

  • Enter contact information into contact management system

  • Maintain an awareness of public relations activity

  • Provide support to the social media efforts

  • Ride (cycle) or go with other transport on 1 or 2 of the legs

  • Other duties as assigned by the Marketing/Communications team

Skills and Requirements:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Detail oriented with the ability to work independently and with minimum supervision

  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills

  • Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or post grad program for one or more of the following;  marketing, communications, advertising, public relations

Orientation/Training:

All volunteers receive support provided by Sea to Sea and World Renew staff.

Time Commitment:

The Sea to Sea tour runs from June 26, 2017 to August 31, 2017.  The time commitment will be as agreed upon by the applicant and the Global Volunteer Program Coordinator and typically meets the required number of hours required by the university/college placement office.

Expectations of all Support Volunteer Staff:  

  • Agree with the mission and purpose of the tour.

  • Provide a recent and clean police check.

  • Must be at least 18 years old by the start of the tour (June 26, 2017)

If applicant is participating on tour; optional

  • Have a valid passport.

*If you do not have a passport, please allow for ample processing time.          

  • Be physically, mentally and spiritually fit.

  • Provide your own tent and other accommodation related equipment.

  • Cover own travel costs to one or two legs of trip.

  • Must have adequate Medical Insurance.  The bike tour will not be providing supplemental health insurance for the participants.  It is up to each individual to have medical insurance that covers services in multiple states and countries.

  • Must be willing to take basic first aid and CPR courses.  Any costs incurred will be reimbursed.
