World Renew Receives More Than .25 Million for Sandy Response

World Renew is one of eight organizations to receive grants this month from the American Red Cross for Super-storm Sandy response. World Renew has been awarded $257,500 to fund volunteer assessment activities for long- term recovery committees in Sandy-related response areas. The assessments will help identify the most vulnerable people who are still in need of assistance in some areas of New York, New Jersey, and Maryland. “World Renew DRS has been very active in Sandy response on the East Coast since the storm hit last October,” says Bill Adams, director of Disaster Response Services (DRS). “This grant will go a long way toward helping people get the assistance they need to start to put their lives back together.”

Tooling Up Alberta Flood Response

Mike Gorchynski is traveling to southern Alberta today to coordinate a major housing reconstruction program in the hard-hit town of High River where record flooding left more than 4,000 homes under water in June. World Renew Disaster Response Services (DRS), anticipates spending at least a half-million dollars on the recovery effort over a two-year period.

World Renew Rebuilds After Ontario Floods

In late August, World Renew volunteers will begin to build a new 28’ x 40’ home in north central Ontario, for homeowners whose house was so badly damaged in spring flooding there that it is beyond repair.

World Renew Responds to Alberta Floods

“We’re collaborating with provincial emergency operations personnel as part of the Alberta NGO Council,” says Henry Visscher, World Renew DRS Regional Manager for Western Canada. “We’re praying that the water will begin to recede now, and it will become clear how much assistance is needed in the short term.”

CRWRC Opens Reconstruction Site in New York State

This week CRWRC Disaster Response Services (DRS) volunteers in Schoharie, New York, are setting up a new reconstruction site that will open July 7. Schoharie was one of eight counties in New York State that President Obama declared a federal disaster area following Hurricane Irene in August, 2011. CRWRC-DRS regional managers Doug and Pat Guikema, who completed a volunteer assignment in Schoharie in June, are returning there to oversee the opening of the new site. The couple reports that the need is still great.
