Life in a Reformed community: Fifty years ago, two brothers, Jesus and Alejandro Canales, came to know Jesus Christ at a revival in Yoro, Honduras. They returned home to Mangulile where they owned a cantina (bar). Their cantina was the life of Mangulile on Saturday nights. They closed the cantina and with their two families, turned the cantina into a church. Thus begins the history of Reformed witness in the town of Mangulile.
Today, Jesus’ daughter, Cristina, lives in the former cantina with her husband, Rafael. She runs the family business, a small store, out of the front of the building, while Rafael works at the public high school as the sub-director of Public education in Mangulile. More than ten CRC members teach in the public education system. Carlomindo and Sonya (image above) run a general store, and Roy Roger Funez runs a saw mill. They are typical small business owners and church members. Adonis Romero is an assistant CRC pastor and a former mayor, currently running for a second term. His wife, Noemi Canales, is the lab technician in the local clinic.
This year, the Mangulile CRC celebrates 50 years of being God’s light in the community. This has been a small look at what God has done and continues to do in this piece of the Kingdom through the members of this church. This is Christian and Reformed witness in Honduras.
Although there’s a new logo at the top of this letter, it doesn’t mean I’ve moved on to a new organization. CRWRC has changed its name to World Renew, but not much else has changed–especially our commitment to Christ-centered community transformation. Personal note. (Caspar) Shortly after our last newsletter, my mother died tragically from a fire in her apartment building. It was bittersweet to be with all of my siblings and Reuben to grieve this loss and give thanks for her testimony of faith.
