“The 7.8 magnitude quake was the most powerful earthquake to hit Ecuador in decades,” said World Renew’s Director of Disaster Response and Rehabilitation, Ken Kim. “While more than 200 people are already confirmed dead, we expect the numbers may rise as information being provided by authorities is updated.”
In addition to the death toll, hundreds of people are injured or still trapped under rubble. Entire communities have been destroyed and infrastructure such as electricity, roads, and communications has been damaged.
World Renew has a long history of doing ministry within Ecuador. From 1983 through 2011, World Renew had a staff presence in the country and worked with local churches and church-based organizations to promote adult literacy, improved health, sustainable agriculture, and income generation.
In the wake of this new crisis, World Renew is reaching out to its former partners as well as current alliances to determine how it can best respond.
“World Renew is blessed to be a member of both the ACT Alliance and the Integral Alliance,” explained Kim. “These Christian networks enable us to coordinate our disaster response efforts to make sure that the maximum number of people are helped in the most efficient and effective way possible.”
