VolunteerManning, South Carolina - Disaster Response Mission Trip

October of 2015 is vividly etched in the memories of a large percentage of the population of South Carolina. A storm system parked over most of the state, causing historic flooding. A year later, Hurricane Matthew caused additional damage.

  • Program: Disaster Response Services
  • Location: South Carolina, United States
  • Type: Individual, Adult group, Youth group, Intergenerational group, School group
  • Length of opportunity: Less than 2 Weeks
  • Skillset needed: Some reconstruction experience helpful, but not required.

When to Volunteer
This site welcomes volunteers from September 23 to November 4, 2017. Groups volunteer typically for one week, but you may volunteer for a longer or shorter period of time.

Scope of Work
The primary focus will be on drywall, trim, flooring, etc. in houses and mobile homes that have flooded. In some cases, foundations or piers may need work. There will be a World Renew DRS facilitator on site who will coordinate your work projects.

Age Requirement
Must be 14 years old and anyone under 18 years of age must have adult supervision.

Skill Level Requirement
No particular skills required, but highly preferable for each group to have at least one skilled person who can take the lead on group projects. There will be a World Renew DRS facilitator on site who will coordinate work projects that align with your skills.

Accommodations and Meals
There is no cost for housing or meals. Your group will stay at the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Manning, SC, 1794 Old Georgetown Rd, Manning, SC 29102.

There is a separate building that includes a small gym, kitchen, youth room, and multiple classrooms on the second level for sleeping. A dozen double-size mattresses, most of which will be on the floor without a frame or boxspring are available; longer-term and less-young volunteers will be prioritized for these mattresses. Groups that result in more than a dozen people at a given time should plan to bring some of their own cots and air mattresses.

The DRS facilitators will be in communication with your group leader ahead of time to negotiate how meals will be coordinated and prepared in a centralized way that works for all those there that week.

Bathrooms/showers are available but limited: 1 bathroom with shower for men, 1 for women. Please share well and be respectful of others’ needs.

It is anticipated that there will be WIFI in the building.

World Renew is blessed to have received a grant from South Carolina which is meant to encourage volunteers to come and help. This grant covers your accommodation and food at this site. You will need to save your receipts to document appropriate costs. The DRS facilitators will have a credit card on which these expenses can be placed if purchased on site.

Note that your group is, however, responsible for travel costs: fuel, hotels, and meals along the way.

Tools and Materials
DRS has a 16-foot tool trailer on site and materials are provided.

What to Bring
Must bring bedding and/or sleeping bag, towels, and personal toiletries. A general list of what to bring can be found in Preparing to Serve.
