VolunteerSt Johns County, Florida - Disaster Response Mission Trip

This is in response to Hurricane Matthew, October 2016.

In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew hit St Johns County, FL with severe storms, high winds, and flooding, damaging almost 4,000 homes. Many are able to repair their homes on their own but World Renew DRS’s partner, Catholic Charities, has identified 300 individuals and families who need your help with home repairs.

  • Skillset needed: Home repair/reconstruction experience is very helpful, but not required.

Scope of Work
General reconstruction, remove and replace sheetrock, insulation, trim, roofing/siding, electrical, plumbing, and flooring.

There is a local construction coordinator who will assign work projects that are appropriate to the size and skill level of your group.

Age Requirement
Generally, high school age and up. Youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.   

Skill Level Requirement
It is helpful to have a couple of people with construction experience in your group, but this is not required. The local construction coordinator will provide guidance on work projects.

Accommodations and Meals
Several local churches have opened their doors for flood-response volunteer workers.  The exact church you will be staying in will depend on the are county with the greatest need, the size and skill levels of your group.  Most of the churches have a capacity of approximately 40 people. All the church facilities offer a place to sleep with cots, restrooms/showers (shower trailer) and a kitchen to prepare your own meals.  

$10-20/person/night depending on where you stay and is payable to the local coordinator. Your group is responsible for all costs associated with your trip. World Renew DRS does not charge for arranging group mission trips.

Tools and Materials
The local construction coordinator in St Johns County will provide and coordinates tools and materials. Skilled tradesmen are encouraged to bring their own tools if possible. This should be discussed with the local construction coordinator during the planning process.

What to Bring
Must bring a sleeping bag, towels, and personal toiletries. A general list of what to bring can be found in Preparing to Serve.
