VolunteerWest Virginia - Disaster Response Mission Trip

This is a response to June 2016 flooding which severely affected 12 counties.

  • Program: Disaster Response Services
  • Location: West Virginia, United States
  • Type: Adult group, Youth group, Intergenerational group, School group
  • Length of opportunity: Less than 2 Weeks
  • Skillset needed: Home Repair

Over 8,000 homeowners registered with FEMA indicating the need for assistance; their homes had major damage or destroyed.  World Renew DRS is partnering with the West Virginia VOAD to identify counties and the most vulnerable homeowners with the greatest need for volunteer assistance.

Scope of Work
There are still multiple counties that need your help repairing homes. Work may include roof and ceiling repair, drywall installation and finishing, flooring installation, and painting.

Must be 14 years of age and volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Skill Level
No experience necessary. The local coordinator will provide guidance on work projects and match the skills of your group with appropriate work.

Accommodations / Meals
Because the damage is across 12 counties, where you stay will depend on which county has the greatest need at the time of your trip, as well as the size and skill set of your group. The housing will most likely be in a church with open floor space for sleeping, or some other community building. There will be restrooms, showers, and a kitchen to prepare your own meals. Some locations may provide all meals for a fee.

Again, because where you will stay depends on a number of variables, the cost may range from $0 - $150/person per week. A location that would cost $150 provides all meals. If there is no cost, a donation to your local coordinator in West Virginia is encouraged. Your group is responsible for all costs associated with your trip. World Renew DRS does not charge for arranging group mission trips.

Tools and Materials
Supplies, tools, and materials are provided. Volunteers can bring work gloves if they like.

What to Bring
Volunteers must bring their own bedding/sleeping bags, towels & toiletries, pillows. A general list of what to bring can be found in Preparing to Serve.
