Injustice: In 2014, the Benue State experienced massive killings of community members and destruction of homes, property and farmlands, in an ethnic conflict between the herders (Fulani) who moved into a valley already occupied by the farmers (Tiv). The government contributed to the chaos and violence. There are many traumatized Tiv people who want to only respond in revenge against the Fulani.
Response: ECJP and Beacon of Hope will be conducting trauma-healing workshops in the Tiv language through local churches. This will involve:
Facilitators leading small groups in a participatory process to help hurting people identify and bring their pain to God. As individuals release their pain, they develop the ability to forgive and be reconciled with those who have inflicted the pain. They are freed to care for themselves and to serve others.
Basic mental health concepts within a biblical framework, using Scripture passages and composite real-life stories to help people connect the teaching with their life circumstances.
