Steve Gisel joined World Renew in June 2019, succeeding Mark Vanderwees as Country Consultant.
Steve holds a B.A. in Social Work and has a diverse professional background. He worked with immigrant survivors of domestic violence before moving to Ecuador to do community development. He returned to the U.S. and worked extensively with at-risk youth who had experienced homelessness, abuse and neglect before becoming the owner/producer of a small vegetable farm in Washington State.
Steve returned to Latin America to do community development in Nicaragua in 2017. During this time, he had the opportunity to collaborate with World Renew partners and was drawn to World Renew’s long-term commitment to accompanying families and communities in their pursuit of solutions to multi-faceted problems. Steve loves learning, asking questions, and finding connections and looks forward to being the link between the wisdom of Nicaraguans organizations and the valuable experience of the global World Renew community.
He and his wife, Anajhensi, live in the city of Leon and are excited to be starting a family. Steve grew up in Michigan and studied at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, while Anajhensi grew up in San Jose de Cusmapa in northern Nicaragua and graduated from university in Guadalajara, Mexico. They both enjoy quiet moments with a book and a cup of coffee, as well as opportunities to be outside in nature.
