The churches of South Sudan have always been the most effective force for peace, especially in recent times; since the 1990s they have persuaded and convinced politicians and warlords to abandon violence and come to the table.
The churches of South Sudan have always been the most effective force for peace, especially in recent times; since the 1990s they have persuaded and convinced politicians and warlords to abandon violence and come to the table.
The People to People peace process of the 90s was church-driven, church-sponsored, and was immensely successful; it led to the great peace meetings and the subsequent peace treaty at Wunlit (1999) and later the peace agreements of Waat, Liliir and several others. It was this People to People process that made the CPA (Comprehensive Peace Agreement) of 2005 possible.
Working together, regardless of denominations or tribal affiliations, churches of all kinds have become active agents for peace, just as Jesus intended His church to be. And now, as this country is once again divided by war and stricken by cruelty and suffering, the Church is mobilizing. This letter of May 26th from the Bishops of the South Sudan Council of Churches is a powerful call to prayer and to peace. The Church is moving forward once again towards a new peace process.
The Beatitudes, sometimes known as The Beautiful Attitudes, tell us that “Blessed are the peace makers, for they shall be called children of God”. Please pray for the work of His Children, the Church in South Sudan, for peace, and for healing.
World Renew is working with four other Christian organizations to prepare a new trauma healing program to help people recover from the trauma of war. This work is being done within the Integral Alliance; please pray for the detailed work of preparing the program plans.
