This little (albeit a bit alarming) experience sure got me thinking about the earthquakes of life.  At World Renew, we work day-in and day-out hearing stories of disaster, trials and conflict; continually showing us that life has many ups and downs (or for the sake of this metaphor shakes and rumbles). What a blessing it is to know that amidst those adversities, we can trust that the Lord is interceding for us, triumphing over death to save us! It is a real reason to keep our eyes ever fixed on the light that is Jesus Christ.

Having this kind of faith in the midst of adversity was demonstrated to me when I had the opportunity to visit the Church of United Agape Fellowship (a Christian Reformed Church in Manila). Agape is led by the fearless and driven Pastor Adelito. I have worked virtually many times with Pastor Adelito on small disaster response projects throughout Philippines, but had never had the opportunity to put a face to the name. Being able to worship Sunday morning at his church was a true blessing to me. The voices of the 30 or so people present could have easily matched in might and passion any large church congregation in Canada. Their love for Christ was clear and resounding!

Pastor Adel, and his wonderful family, are doing amazing ministry in the Paranaque area of Metro Manila. They have opened a children’s nursery in the bottom floor of their meager church building, and have also now reached their potential of having 4 pastors on staff (Senior, Associate, Youth and Outreach). Their impact and presence in the community is well known.

In this past year, World Renew has even worked with the church to add a second floor to their building which will serve as the office and location for the pre-positioning of Disaster Response for the Christian Reformed Church denomination in the Philippines (this centre is known as the “House of Mercy”).

In light of the many trials that have been faced by this small church in the last year (including the effects of both Typhoon Haiyan and Typhoon Hagiput ) their desire to serve the Lord and remain committed to his guidance and word is such a testimony to a faith that can move mountains!

I may not be able to see the real effects that suffering through an earthquake can bring, but what I do know is that with all of the twists and turns in life and the shaking and rumbling of the earthquakes of each season, I will remember the congregation of Agape Fellowship, and Pastor Adel’s ministry.

What a great opportunity for World Renew to continue to partner with such a committed, loving, and Christ-like congregation that seeks to serve those that are vulnerable and in need of Christ’s love around them.

Bless the Lord, oh their souls… we worship your holy name!  Amen!
