For the past three months Ecuador has been affected by unusually heavy rainfall which has flooded coastal lowlands; destroying crops and disrupting transportation links, making it difficult for aid to reach remote communities. In addition to the flood water, storms have destroyed homes and displaced 14,000 people who are now living in temporary shelter. The crop loss has resulted in food shortages and the stagnant water and contaminated wells are leading to outbreaks of dengue fever and malaria, as well as parasitic and viral infections.

CRWRC, with its partner Rowan, has begun its response to the situation in Ecuador by distributing mosquito nets and food aid to families in 12 remote communities in the Manabí province and two communities in the Guayas province.  However, April is typically the wettest month in Ecuador so further assistance will be necessary to sustain these families through the rainy season.
