Durga’s own home was completely destroyed during the earthquake. Because she lacked the documents to prove that she owned the land she lives on or the house that was destroyed, the government refused to provide her with any compensation.

In addition, the land shifted enough in some areas that it broke the terrace structure which the villagers used to run a gravity-fed irrigation system. This has delayed their ability to plant this year’s crops and caused a lot of extra work for the farmers as they prepare their fields. Much of the villages previous food supply was also destroyed by the landslides that occurred following the earthquake.

That’s why Durga and her neighbors were so grateful for the food and other supplies they received from World Renew.

“World Renew runs a fair program,” she said. “Those who should receive help got it. There was no bickering or arguing. We are all excited that someone has come to our aid.”

Durga lives with her husband, son and father-in-law. The food will enable them to eat until a new crop can be harvested. The family has also built a temporary structure with a tin roof to shelter them until something more permanent can be built.

“With the monsoons upon us now, there is a certain amount of fear,” she said.  “No one knows what to expect. Staying dry and the possibility of additional landslides worry me.”

Durga was also selected to receive training in water management, sanitation and hygiene from World Renew’s water and sanitation coordinator, Indra. This will help to control disease in the village since the latrine structure was destroyed during the earthquake.  Durga said that she learned a lot from the training including proper hand-washing techniques, the importance of boiling water, and how to reduce contamination in water sources. With the things Durga has learned, she can help teach others and prevent illness until the water system and latrine can be rebuilt.

World Renew is blessed to be able to share God’s love in this way to Durga and others who are suffering in Nepal.  Thank you for making this ministry possible.
