With this passionate plea, World Renew’s Advocacy Manager, Melody Mendonça, began a short workshop for employees of the Christian Reformed Church in North America in Burlington, Ontario around a new advocacy campaign called “Good Soil”.

Good Soil is an ongoing campaign started by the Canadian Foodgrains Bank that is actively endorsed by World Renew. The campaign is aimed at encouraging the Canadian government to continue its long history of fighting global hunger by increasing foreign aid funding that assists small-scale farmers.

“Investing in agriculture in developing countries delivers many benefits,” Mendonça said, going on to site examples of how investment in small-scale farmers can boost economies, improve nutrition, empower women, and better the health of children.

While Canada has a long history of strong support for agricultural development through organizations like World Renew and the Foodgrains Bank, Mendonça explained that in recent years Canada’s aid budget for agricultural development has been declining. That’s why the Good Soil campaign is so important.

“We live in a democratic country where our elected representatives are required to listen to our input and incorporate our perspectives into their policy,” Mendonça shared. “As Christians, if we raise our collective voice, we can make a difference.”

With Canada currently heading towards an election, several resources have been put together to help people participate in the Good Soil campaign. This includes:

Following Mendonça’s short, lunch-hour presentation, World Renew and CRCNA staff members in attendance were encouraged to write and send letters to the electoral candidates in their home ridings.
