Honduras: Nourishing Hope and Health
In a small, rural village in southern Honduras, Dania cradled her young daughter, Sofía, with a mix of love and concern. Sofía had always been a lively toddler, but her appetite had waned, and she seemed less energetic.
Worried about her daughter’s health, Dania decided to attend the monthly weigh-in organized by Diaconía Nacional, in partnership with World Renew’s Maternal and Child Health (MCH) program.
At the community center, a nurse measured Sofía and carefully placed her on the scale. Dania’s heart sank when she learned that Sofía had lost significant weight since the previous month. Recognizing the urgency, the nurse provided Dania with a bottle of Vitamin A and packets of Incaparina—a nutritional supplement made from corn and soy flours fortified with essential vitamins and minerals for children. The nurse explained how to prepare Incaparina with milk to enhance its nutritional value.
Determined to restore her daughter’s health, Dania followed the nurse’s instructions diligently. She noticed positive changes as Sofía ‘s appetite improved, and her playful spirit returned. At the next month’s weigh-in, relief washed over Dania when the scale showed that Sofía had regained her weight.
Reflecting on her experience, Dania shares, “Diaconía and World Renew have helped me a lot. I come to weigh my daughter every month. When I found out she had lost weight, the nurse gave me Vitamin A and Incaparina. After giving them to my daughter, I saw the change; she started eating her food again. For me, the weigh-ins are very important because we can see how our children are growing. The best thing is that if the children lose weight, the nurse gives the [supplements] so that the child regains their weight. It is good support, what they are doing, how they are helping us. Because we do need to know how our children are growing, and the most beautiful thing is that our children grow up healthy and strong.”
Through the support of World Renew and its local partner, Dania gained the knowledge and resources needed to ensure her daughter’s well-being. Our MCH program’s dedication to child growth and nutrition played a vital role in Sofía’s recovery, proving how local health initiatives can help children everywhere grow up healthy and strong.
