Parents have an essential role in World Renew’s work with families in communities around the world. This is why World Renew actively walks alongside mothers and fathers to equip them to connect children with the loving support and resources they need to build a good life. The participation of parents in World Renew’s adolescent health and rights programs in Nigeria is one powerful example.

In many poor communities, young people have limited opportunities for education and employment. They also often face social pressures that can lead them to engage in risky behaviors, such as unprotected sex or violence. World Renew’s adolescent health and rights programs, which are made possible in partnership with Global Affairs Canada, are designed to help young people in poor communities know their rights and make healthy choices.
Through these programs, young people learn about critical health issues such as sexually transmitted infections, reproductive health, and sexual abuse. Since these are issues that most parents traditionally consider inappropriate to talk about with their children, however, adolescents do not always get the support they need to change their actions and attitudes. Addressing this gap in communication between parents and children is a critical part of building positive change in the community.
Together, adolescents and their family members are trained in the communication skills they need to discuss sensitive topics. As a result, parents have better understanding of the pressures and challenges their children face. Parents can then encourage their children in caring well for their bodies, speaking up for their rights, identifying and responding to harassment, and building safe relationships.
"Truly this training has helped us!"
“This program has helped me understand that my son and daughter should never be afraid to talk to me about any issue,” said one of the mothers involved in the program. “I am really happy with the materials that help us discuss difficult issues. My husband also appreciates them. A few years ago when our children were in primary school, the only thing that concerned their father was whether the school fees were paid. But ever since we began discussing these materials, he now frequently goes over to the school to check on how our children are doing. Truly this training has helped us!”
The United Nations has designated June 1 as The Global Day of Parents in an effort to honor parents around the world for their role in nurturing and protecting their children and creating a family environment of happiness, love, and understanding. Please join World Renew in praising God for the gift of parents, and praying that more mothers and father will be invested helping their child have a healthier, more joyful life and a future full of promise and opportunity.
