Hope at Work in a Community

By: Kohima Daring

COVID-19 has presented many challenges, but it has offered opportunities for creativity and growth. Through one of World Renew’s partners in Bangladesh, the members of the Ku-Chalsan Federation have received trainings—including leadership, literacy, health, and income-generating activities. The members of the federation took what they learned during the trainings to help their community navigate challenges of the pandemic.

When COVID-19 lockdowns began in 2020, many people were unable to work, and their weekly savings became irregular. In response to their community’s struggle, 15 federation members began an initiative to cultivate ginger, along with vegetables such as pumpkin, beans, and carrots. The vegetables have already been harvested and distributed this year to support 35 families who had lost income due to COVID-19.

As one of the family members who was supported by the initiative, Akhilbandhu Sanjib*, said, “This federation has helped my family in our time of need, and they did it out of their love.” The Ku-Chalsan Federation members plan to continue working together to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic. Once the ginger is harvested, the profit will be used to further expand the income-generating activities of the federation and support the local community. Sanjib is one of many who are grateful. “I thank God for them and pray that he continues to bless this federation and all that they are doing.”
