Extreme violence against the Rohingya people is tearing families apart. Thousands have been the victims of senseless violence. We can scarcely begin to fathom the depth of heartbreak and loss that Selima is experiencing. Everything has happened so fast.

Selima and two of her children escaped from an attack on their village in Myanmar and made their way towards the river that borders Bangladesh.

“We spent the day in the boat. Then we walked 17 days and we arrived here,” shares Selima.

An eighteen day journey has left Selima and her children exhausted and hungry. And now they are surrounded by an unfamiliar world, with no clear way forward. Bangladesh may be free of violence, but this young family still faces many uncertainties.

“We don’t know the country, don’t know the language but we were told that in a refugee camp, we could probably get a shelter and some food.”

Bangladesh has welcomed nearly 500,000 Rohingya refugees in the last month. But the needs are so extensive that the infrastructure and emergency aid supplies are not enough.

Selima’s story is heartbreaking, but it needs to be told. We must remember the Rohingya people in this time of crisis. We need to pray that the Prince of Peace will miraculously bring about reparation in this region, that violence would be quelled, and that families would be safe.

We also need urgent financial support to respond to the needs of the Rohingya people in Bangladesh.

World Renew is quickly responding quickly (in collaboration with members of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, Integral Alliance, and ACT Alliance) to address one of the most immediate needs that these families are facing: HUNGER.

World Renew, in partnership with the Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB), plans to provide life-saving food assistance to over 18,000 people like Selima who are in desperate need.

It is our prayer that this assistance will provide a small measure of hope and certainty for families who are beginning to despair.
