One Acre of Hope

One Acre of Hope

Around the world, the impacts of climate change are being felt with long droughts, erratic rainfall, and changes in the growing seasons. Most global farmers are small-scale, meaning they often farm on small, one-acre plots of land. With so little land to farm, and the growing effects of climate change, the line between flourishing and struggling is a fine one.

Today, many farmers are contending with failing agriculture, depleted soil, water shortages, and the need to quickly adapt to a changing climate.

For Álvaro, farming in the “Dry Corridor” of Nicaragua has its share of challenges, but since joining a World Renew Farmer School in his community, he has learned climate-adaptive farming methods that help to make his small plot of land more productive. These low till, “conservation” techniques are reviving agriculture in Álvaro’s community by protecting the soil, reducing water use, minimizing pests, and diversifying crops. World Renew also supplies farmers like Álvaro with climate-adapted seeds, so they can grow crops that will thrive, even in harsh conditions.

So far, Álvaro has seen a remarkable difference in his crop yields and the health of his soil: “I began this vegetable garden when I started with the Farmers’ School . . . When I did the workshop on compost-filled holes . . . I liked what I saw in that workshop, and I came home and did it here, and then I really saw a big change in the amount of work required, the amount of compost required, and the great results.”

Most importantly, Álvaro now grows enough food to feed and support his family; something he did not think was possible. He shares excitedly, “This produces a lot of food for us, and also for us to sell. You can see the results, we’ve got lots of green peppers, we’ve got big tomatoes, look at the size of them!”

When you give to World Renew’s climate-adaptive farming programs, your donation will give hope to more small-scale farmers like Álvaro. Thank you for giving farmers the opportunity to grow more food, earn a better income, and revive the land for future generations.
