Join the fight against gender injustice: a fundamental cause of ongoing poverty.
Gender injustice refers to the unfair and unequal treatment of individuals based on their gender. In the countries where World Renew works, gender injustice most often targets women and girls and is driven by social constructs and cultural norms that perpetuate inequality and sometimes even abuse.
Although the fight for gender justice has seen tremendous success and has improved in most societies over the past few decades through legislation and education, significant work remains in order to change the story of injustice. Hence, women achieve equal opportunity and influence and communities can truly thrive.
The following content contains descriptions and stories of the violence women suffer around the world on a daily basis. We understand this content could trigger readers who have their own stories of harm and invite these readers to navigate away from this page at this time. If you would like to give to World Renew to end gender violence without reading further, you may do so here.
Why is Gender Justice Important?
When communities are entirely dominated by a single gender in power positions, we all suffer. Gender inequality sidelines more than half of the world’s talent and potential: denying proper educational, economic, and public participation, as well as leadership opportunities for women and girls, and encouraging violence. That’s a significant loss of human potential and a huge hindrance to community progress and poverty reduction.
Did you know that even today:
- 1 in 3 girls aged 15-19 has suffered female genital mutilation in the 30 countries where it is practiced.
- One billion women worldwide are actively suffering from rape, beatings, or other abuse.
- 80% of countries around the world have seen an uptick in gender-based violence in the last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
What Do We Do?
We work alongside women and men, including those living with disabilities or HIV. Those who are working their way out of poverty with skill training, leadership development, and equal opportunities to secure long-lasting, stable sources of income.
And, we change the story of violence against women. World Renew partners with organizations all over the world to help prevent and respond to violence against women by changing unfair laws and challenging harmful cultural practices that treat women and girls unfairly. We do this work by hosting community conversations and dialogue.
How a Lack of Gender Justice is Linked to Violence
Did you know that there are 2.6 billion women living in countries where rape within marriage is not considered a crime? Gender-based violence perpetuates a culture of oppression against women such as the stories below.
