The Government of Canada has announced a match for humanitarian projects responding to famine and extreme food insecurity in many African countries. Every dollar donated by Canadians to drought and famine relief between March 17 and June 30 will be matched by the government.

This match is on top of the existing match of up to 4:1 awarded through the Canadian Foodgrains Bank. That means that until June 30, your donation is eligible to be worth up to five times more!

“Over 20 million men, women and children are at risk of starvation if we do not act now,” said the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of International Development, when the Canadian Government announced the funding match through the newly established Famine Relief Fund.

“Over 20 million men, women and children are at risk of starvation if we do not act now.”

Severe drought and conflict has placed millions at risk of starvation. Famine has already been declared in South Sudan, and several other countries are on the brink of famine. The scale of this crisis is enormous; a United Nations official declared this the “worst humanitarian crisis since 1945.”

World Renew is already responding to this crisis in South Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Nigeria. These countries are all eligible for the Government of Canada’s matching donation program.

In South Sudan, World Renew’s work includes supporting a program that is providing nutritional food supplements to malnourished children. This assistance is reaching 1,000 families with children under 5, pregnant or nursing women, or those headed by a single adult or child.

In the midst of a humanitarian crisis it’s easy to lose sight of the human impact. These 20 million people are more than just a number; they are mothers and fathers, sons and daughters – all made in the image of God. It’s important to remember the people in the midst of a crisis of this magnitude.

“Canadians have always demonstrated great compassion when it comes to humanitarian crises,” shared Minister Bibeau. “I encourage all Canadians to donate to the registered Canadian charities of their choice. Together, we can make a difference and bring relief to people who need urgent help.”

World Renew will continue to respond in the crisis affected areas with your support.

Please donate today and help support World Renew’s work to feed the hungry and demonstrate God’s love to millions in need.
