World Renew has been working in Senegal since 1989, working with communities to improve health, income, and food security. World Renew also promotes women’s and youth rights through peace and justice programs.
Senegal is one of West Africa’s more stable countries, but it remains a low-income nation with widespread food insecurity. With approximately 46 per cent of the country classified as semi-arid, Senegal is especially vulnerable to the effects of climate change and drought. Senegal is faced with several development challenges including low levels of education, high unemployment, and increased vulnerability to climate change. World Renew supports communities and local partners through programs that improve livelihoods, food security, and health. Our programs in Senegal have a special emphasis on youth empowerment and rights, encouraging young people to focus on their education while avoiding early marriage.
“My sister used to fight often, but she has improved tremendously. She loves the [Adolescent Health and Rights] program meetings and does not miss any. I know a little about the sessions because of her. She tells me that they ask questions, and the participants discuss the answers. The educator makes them aware of certain types of behavior that are harmful to their health . . . Now that I am aware of the importance of the program . . . I will participate next year.”
