(KENYA) Nyevu Sidi Chenje is one of the “poorest of the poor”—a group member identified by World Renew’s local partner in Mariani, Kenya, Pwani Christian Community. The coastal area of Kenya has been known to have some of the highest poverty levels in the country. As one of the poorest residents in Mariani, Nyevu struggles to survive on a daily basis.

Nyevu received training in poultry production in 2011 as part of an “Integrated Food Security Program” that was funded by the Foods Resource Bank. At the end of the training, she was given one cock, two hens, poultry feed, and a chick basket (incubator) for raising the newborn chicks. To date, Nyevu has sold 13 hens and earned $40 USD. While it’s not a lot of money, Nyevu used the money to buy clothes, a sleeping mat, rope, food, and water during the dry season.
This is what she said to a partner staff who recently visited her: “If it were not for the hens, I would not be able to buy these things. God bless the ones who helped provide the hens.”
This humble story reminds me of a famous quote that many of us know, but too often forget: “Give a person a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a person to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” By teaching people skills and offering them small income-generating opportunities like poultry production, World Renew not only helps disadvantaged people cope better with life struggles, but deliberately builds dignity in the process. Dignity is something that Nyevu, in her already challenging situation, deserves more than ever!
