WHAT WE DO

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with 218.5 million people, and it is one of the world’s most diverse nations with more than 250 ethnic groups speaking over 500 languages. It is also home to many natural landmarks and wildlife reserves. With 40.1% of the population (nearly 87.5 million people) living below the poverty line, extreme poverty is widespread. Today, Nigeria faces many challenges: the Boko Haram insurgency in the north, clashes between animal herders and farmers over water and grazing rights, and a stagnating economy with high inflation. World Renew works to address the needs of communities in the areas of health and livelihood creation, while also providing emergency assistance and psychosocial support to the survivors of conflict and violence.

RENEWING HOPE: CHANGING STORIES OF POVERTY

“God used my banana-selling business to keep me connected with other people during the COVID lockdown period. Even though I experienced reduced patronage and income, I felt encouraged knowing that I had some savings to help support my family. Now, I do not wake up and start thinking of who I will go to for help. People rather come to me for help because the Lord is helping me.”

PARTNERS IN NIGERIA

Beacon of Hope Initiative (BHI) works directly with communities and organizations to improve health outcomes for mothers and children, advocate for those living with AIDS and HIV, and educate adolescents on their health and rights. BHI and World Renew also respond to the psychosocial needs of survivors of conflict and violence to help them find healing after trauma.

The Ecumenical Centre for Justice and Peace (ECJP) was established in 1996 to train and empower communities to address justice issues and violent crises through peacebuilding, accountable governance, and participatory community-based development. Together, ECJP and World Renew have initiated programs in HIV and AIDS advocacy and care, health education, income generation, and adult literacy.

The Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre (commonly called Beautiful Gate) provides physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual support to those who are in some way handicapped. The organization equips disabled people with assistive devices, such as wheelchairs, so they can live successful, fulfilling lives. The organization provides an important platform for Christian-Muslim collaboration and peacebuilding in a country that often faces sectarian conflict.
