Embracing New Knowledge for the Sake of Family

Mr. Sun Huy, now in his 60s, sits quietly on a plastic chair beneath his stilted home in rural Cambodia. For nearly a decade, limited job opportunities in his village forced him to live and work in Thailand. His goal was simple but profound: to earn enough to send his children to school and secure a better future for them.

But as the years passed and his body aged, Sun grew concerned. He knew he couldn’t keep working far from home forever. In 2016, he made the difficult but heartfelt decision to return to Cambodia—back to his family, his roots, and the land he knew best.

Upon his return, Sun was introduced to an agriculture producer group supported by World Renew and its local partner, OREDA. The opportunity proved life changing. Through the group, he learned modern and sustainable farming techniques, including organic fertilizer production, improved soil management, and vegetable cultivation. With renewed hope, he began applying what he learned.

The results soon followed—his fields flourished, and harvests became more abundant.

With guidance and encouragement from World Renew and OREDA, Sun began selling his produce at markets, not only in his village but also at the district and provincial levels. His determination and openness to new knowledge paid off.

Sun has continued to expand his farming activities, diversifying his crops and increasing his resilience.

“I have dedicated myself fully to agricultural activities and business, and now I earn an income comparable to what I made in Thailand,” Sun says with a smile. “However, I am happier because I am with my family, my health is better, and I am involved in the community. I am confident that my family’s income and our community’s well-being will continue to improve as our market linkages strengthen in the future.”

What once seemed like a step back—leaving a job abroad—has become a leap forward. With hard work and newfound knowledge, Sun has cultivated not only his land but also a better life, right at home.
