Love Grows in Happy Chirindo’s Garden

In a small village in southwest Kenya, Happy Chirindo and her children spend their days working and playing in their family’s garden. Under the bright sun, their hands gently tend to rows of amaranth, kale, okra, and tomatoes. But more than just food, this garden is a place where love and hope grow—a symbol of resilience in the face of hardship.

Happy knows that her children will have enough to eat today and tomorrow. But in this region—one of the poorest in Kenya—thousands of families wake up each morning uncertain where their next meal will come from. Years of prolonged drought have devastated crops, leaving many struggling with hunger and malnutrition. Across the country, 26% of Kenyan children under the age of five experience stunting due to poor nutrition.

Through the support of World Renew, Happy has learned sustainable farming techniques that help her garden flourish even in difficult conditions. Climate-adaptive methods like water conservation and soil protection allow her to produce more food, and she now grows enough not only to feed her family, but also to sell for income. This newfound stability has transformed her household, providing hope for the future.

Happy’s journey doesn’t end in the garden. As a mother of young children, she is also part of World Renew’s mother and child health programs. She receives home visits from a trained community health volunteer, ensuring that her children remain healthy during their first years of life. Nutrition classes have taught her how to prepare balanced meals rich in essential nutrients, giving her boys the strength to play, grow, and one day attend school.

Women like Happy are at the heart of food security for their families. By equipping mothers with knowledge, skills, and support, World Renew is empowering them to tackle child malnutrition head-on. As Happy gains knowledge and skills in farming, she knows she is giving her children a strong foundation for a brighter future.

When we support mothers and farmers like Happy, we cultivate more than just crops—we nurture love, health, and opportunity. Together, we can help love take root and grow in communities where it is needed most.
