“These Food Vouchers Are Our Daily Bread”
“These Food Vouchers Are Our Daily Bread”
Hassan lived with his family in peace and security until civil war broke out in Syria. Like many civilians, he was badly injured in an attack, resulting in torn ligaments in his leg and producing an infection that ultimately left Hassan crippled. Since then, Hassan fled with his family to Lebanon, and they now live as refugees.
While in Lebanon, Hassan’s wife and the mother of his two sons, Hussein and Ali, died of a heart attack. Now, Hassan is both primary caretaker and provider for his boys, facing fear each day over stable food and income due to the limitations of his disability and the lack of secure work for refugees. Despite all the tragedies he has faced, Hassan remains committed to caring for his children and encouraging their dreams for the future.
Like any father, Hassan is proud of his boys: “The boys are very young, and I want them to stay in school, where they enjoy going and have excellent grades. Hussein likes math and Arabic and he wants to be an engineer. Ali wants to be a doctor and he likes soccer. When they are not in school, they like playing outside and taking care of the chickens.”
As Hassan’s family waits in hope for the day they can return home, World Renew and our partner in Lebanon, MERATH, have provided them with food vouchers and other necessities like blankets and mattresses. It’s a gift of hope and loving care during a time of immense difficulty for the family.
Hassan says, “The church here gives us food vouchers every month [through World Renew]. If we ever need some additional help, the [local] Pastor brings us food in person. In winter the church also gave us some mattresses, blankets and some other items. These food vouchers really are our daily bread. Our life would be much harder without them. All in all, I thank God for the church and that I’m still alive to be there for my young kids.”
For over 10 years, Hassan has been searching for peace for his family. But your gift of daily bread fosters hope for families like Hassan’s as they await the day when peace eventually returns. Thank you for reflecting God’s heart for refugees by caring for their most essential needs through your gifts to World Renew.
