What is HAppening?

I catch my kids saying, "What is HAppening?!" in an exasperated tone - and their facial expression, well, mirrors their tone. It’s really funny actually—they are 5 and 3. The baby can’t talk yet but I imagine he will pick that up from his siblings as time goes on.

“We got a phone call at 10 pm Saturday night from our United Methodist partner in North Carolina. They asked us if we could send volunteers to help with clean up after Hurricane Matthew flooded the area last week,” said World Renew DRS Regional Managers Rick and Bonnie Wiersma. “The community needs help; now we need volunteers to provide that help.”

World Renew is responding to extensive damage from Hurricane Matthew, which made a direct hit on the southwest corner Haiti on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016. World Renew staff on the ground in Leogane and Duchity are assessing the needs of those who were affected and are determining how resources can best be used to provide emergency aid to those who need it most – even as Matthew heads for the U.S. East Coast today.

At sunrise this morning, Hurricane Matthew was battering the southwestern tip of Haiti as a Category 4 hurricane. The gigantic storm is packing 145 mph (220 km) winds, dropped 20 to 40 inches of rain on the country, and blew 7- to 10-foot waves onto the western coast. World Renew is appealing for funds to respond to the destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew.

Did you watch any of the summer Olympics this year? I loved observing the athletes, each of them filled with hope and determination to be the best in the world or at least to be the best they can be. Some of them came to the Olympics with a story that is full of pain and heartache, of families and coaches who sacrificed enormous amounts of resources and of past injury or losses in their health that almost prevented them from participating. In every case they held a vision for an even better story of achievement.

Humbled and Proud

As we got back into the boat on Lake Niassa to head back to Lichinga, I pondered the day in my heart. I felt so humbled and yet so proud at the same time. The day had started much earlier, before dawn, when we woke up to travel by boat to visit a remote community in Mozambique. As we headed for the lake, our guides informed us that we could not go; the wind was creating waves that would make the journey unsafe. We would wait a few hours.
