World Renew has been working in Lebanon since 2012, responding to the needs of vulnerable, disaster-affected Lebanese families and assisting refugees who have fled the prolonged civil war in neighboring Syria.
Lebanon is currently facing an outbreak of conflict within its borders in addition to the deep economic crisis of recent years. Before the spread of this conflict, nearly 80% of the population were living in poverty, making them particularly vulnerable during this crisis. High inflation and reliance on imports make the cost of food and other necessities unaffordable for many Lebanese families. Since the start of the Syrian civil war, more than 1.5 million Syrian refugees took shelter in Lebanon. Most live in vulnerable conditions, often lacking enough food and shelter, necessities, and access to services. Today, 9 out of 10 Syrian refugees living in Lebanon require humanitarian assistance to survive. World Renew serves the most vulnerable in Lebanon by providing food assistance through a voucher program, winter shelter, and other essentials such as diapers and hygiene items.
“I have five children. We came to Lebanon in 2018 because our house was hit by a bomb, and we had to leave. Luckily, we were not at home at the time, but my husband was, and he was hit on the shoulder. It took me three years to track him down and find out that he is still alive, but that he has [injuries] to his hand and his leg. He is still in Syria. Shortly after I came here, my neighbors told me about [MERATH]. . . We are helped with fuel for gas stoves, blankets, mattresses, food, milk, and diapers. Whenever we need something, they are here to help. . . We are very grateful. This is a lifeline for us.”
