World Renew has worked in Malawi since 1989, coming alongside communities and families through community programs in the key areas of health, disaster response, economic opportunity, peace and justice, and food security.
Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries. Several issues continue to keep Malawi in poverty. These include drought, declining soil fertility, poor crop yields, low levels of education, high population density, flooding, high inflation, and the continuing HIV/AIDS epidemic. Malawi is also in the path of cyclones which are growing more frequent with climate change. World Renew works with local communities to improve their food security, family incomes, and their ability to prepare and recover from natural disasters.
“Through World Renew’s [food security] project, I have learned a lot of things. I used to have a garden but never harvested all year-round. Finding vegetables to eat was difficult for me over the past years. Currently, my family has enough food, and we sell the surplus to buy household requirements. I sell a minimum of 4,000 MK ($5 USD) of vegetables per day and manage to pay school fees for my 3 children.”
