This part of the world is known for its beauty and wildlife. It is home to Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, the two tallest peaks in Africa. It also has several large lakes, beautiful beaches, and grasslands that are home to elephants, lions, rhinos, and other creatures. Many people in East Africa make their living in traditional ways such as subsistence farming and animal-rearing. However, years of poor harvests combined with limited opportunities for employment have led growing numbers of people to migrate to cities in an effort to earn a living. Urban poverty is a growing concern. HIV/AIDS, malaria, tribal conflicts, and government corruption also play factors in preventing the people in this region from improving their lives.
World Renew has been working in Eastern Africa for many years. In partnership with several large, Christian denominations as well as smaller community partners, World Renew has seen many positive improvements in the region. Much of the emphasis of its programs is on improved agricultural techniques and helping farmers increase their crop yields. Other programs focus on health, nutrition, AIDS awareness and prevention, and small business training.
