Empowering Youth Through Running Clubs in Kenya

Africa’s growing youth population offers both promise and complexity, as many young people across the continent grapple with challenges like poverty, substance abuse, violence, and lack of opportunity.

Recognizing the need for structured mentorship, World Renew’s Youth Running Clubs, known as “Kijana Ajibika,” have taken root in the Mt. Kenya West region. The initiative aims to equip children aged 8 to 16 with life skills, confidence, and a sense of purpose through sports and personal development training.

Since its inception, the program has expanded from 30 to 58 clubs, engaging over 1,300 Kenyan children and teenagers. Under the guidance of trained coaches, these young participants explore topics like goal setting, self-esteem, and making positive life choices. Physical fitness is a core component, with weekly training sessions designed to instill discipline, teamwork, and resilience.

The results have been transformative. Many children exhibit increased confidence, responsibility, and improved social interactions. Coaches note that the program helps address key challenges such as drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, domestic violence, and child neglect.

Anne Wangari, a coach with the Youth Running Club, highlights how the program creates a safe space for children to express themselves and share their fears. Through structured mentorship, they develop self-awareness, discover hidden talents, and learn to set goals for their future. She says, “They are learning to support each other and navigate life’s challenges with a positive mindset.”

The impact is evident in stories like those of Velena and Alan, both 11 years old. Velena, who once struggled with dishonesty and irresponsibility, now takes pride in her honesty and self-worth. Alan, who was uncertain about choosing the right friends, has learned to prioritize positive influences and avoid harmful behaviors. Inspired by his growth, he aspires to become a coach and mentor other children.

By fostering resilience, discipline, and self-confidence, the Youth Running Clubs are shaping a brighter future for Kenya’s youth. Through sports and mentorship, these young individuals are not only improving their own lives but also contributing positively to their communities.
