Transforming Lives with Kitchen Garden Kits
Transforming Lives with Kitchen Garden Kits
Louise*, a mother of six from rural Kenya, found herself as the sole breadwinner for her family when her husband was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2020. Determined to provide for her family, Louise joined the local Farmers Field School (FFS), a specialized agriculture program started jointly by World Renew and a local partner working in Louise’s community. The program is dedicated to empowering smallholder farmers with practical skills to enhance their livelihoods and incomes.
One of the most impactful changes Louise made was starting a kitchen garden—a sustainable and simple solution to food insecurity. Inspired by the techniques she learned at the FFS, Louise planted kale, onions, and other vegetables in her small backyard plot. The results were transformative.
Since starting her kitchen garden, Louise has not had to purchase vegetables, as her thriving garden produces enough to meet her family’s needs. Beyond saving money, the fresh produce ensures that her children enjoy nutritious meals, supporting their health and growth.
Encouraged by her success, Louise plans to expand her garden and diversify her crops to include a wider range of vegetables. She credits the FFS training, as well as the tools and seeds provided to her, for giving her the chance to create this sustainable solution.
In addition to her gardening achievements, Louise has applied other skills from her FFS training, such as building a secure chicken coop, practicing better poultry management, and even starting to raise goats for extra income. However, it is her kitchen garden that, so far, has brought her the most immediate and lasting impact.
She is very much impressed by the training she received and is grateful for the opportunity to learn new skills, saying, “I will make a tremendous effort until I have adopted all the skills.”
Louise’s story highlights the incredible power of kitchen garden kits in transforming lives. With your support of World Renew and its work, more families like Louise’s can embrace sustainable farming methods, achieve food security, and build brighter futures.
For $25, you will be giving a family five growing sacks and five seed packets to help them grow nutritious, healthy food, right at their doorstep. Kitchen gardens kits may seem small—but they can have a big impact for a family experiencing hunger.
