Maria Mateyo is a good mother. The young woman from Chinkewende village in Malawi works alongside her husband, Mateyo, to grow crops in their field. She cooks the family’s meals and keeps her home clean. When she gave birth to Memory, her first child, Maria also breastfed her child exclusively to make sure that her immunities were passed on.

(SOUTHERN AFRICA) Recently I dropped off my son Nathan at the airport. He returned to Canada to complete Grade 12 there. I feel that living in Malawi is a blessing: but I must concede that living 12,000 miles away from my son is a great sacrifice for us and one that we find very difficult to make. Watching my tall, strong, and intelligent son walk out of my sight at the gate made me reflect on some fathers and sons that I have visited the past few months….
Last year Sabina, a teenaged housewife in Korunia, Bangladesh, was able to give birth to a healthy son because of World Renew’s maternal and child health programs. Today, we celebrate success stories like hers as we remember the thousands of women who die or are injured during childbirth and delivery each year. May 23 is the second International Day to End Obstetric Fistula—an injury that can occur when childbirth is prolonged, obstructed, or in Sabina’s case, the mother is too young physically to give birth safely. The birth canal tears, creating a hole into the rectum or bladder. The tear leaves the woman incontinent—and often results not only a lifelong disability but also ostracism from her family and community.
